It all started with three book-loving friends sitting around chatting about books, as they often did. “Wouldn’t it be great if we could open a bookshop,” one of them mused, to all-around agreement.
(These are, after all, the people who describe their bookshop as “a place for booklovers and booksniffers.”)
And then, lo and behold, a recently widowed friend asked for their help in dealing with the extensive library of her recently deceased husband, a Philosophy Lecturer at the University of South Australia.
The trio grabbed the opportunity with both hands, found a vacant shop in High Street Willunga which they could afford, and so was born Unbound Books. The shop also acted as an outlet for Unwound Fabrics, the brain child of local weaver Caroline Madge.
The library of the academic, Peter Woolcock, was as you would expect heavy on philosophy and comparative religion. In the years since the bookshop has been operating, however, and especially since relocating to Port Road Aldinga last year, the range has broadened considerably, reflecting the taste and demand of the local community, with the addition of lots of fiction, art and crafts, kids’ books and science fiction, etc.

According to Danny Persse who, along with Andi Doerr and Liz Newnham, now runs Unbound Books, the name says it all. “There’s no limit to the range of books, and the categories of books, that we carry.
“People come in to check us out,” says Danny, “and they’re still in the shop several hours later!”
Unbound Books also serves some fine coffee from Fleurieu Roast, though Danny is keen to point out the coffee is served only in mugs. “No take-away cups here, thank you!” he said.
Unbound Books are located at 169 Port Road, Aldinga at the entrance to the Aldinga Arts and Eco Village, just next door to the Sweet Life Gelateria.
Opening hours are flexible, but normally between 10 am and 3 pm Thursday to Sunday.
