Gates have officially opened at the new skate park – located just south of the Aldinga Sports Park oval off Old Coach Road – with hundreds of people rolling up to test its ramps, bowls and street obstacles.
City of Onkaparinga Mayor Moira Were called the opening of the new park – the latest piece of a major long-term vision to redevelop Aldinga Sports Park – a landmark day for those who like to skate, scoot and ride.
“We heard – through our online survey and during face-to-face drop-in sessions – that the community wanted a deeper bowl section for more advanced users, a street plaza with challenging obstacles and beginner ramps, and more open flat space to increase the park’s capacity and aid beginners,” she said.
“I’m pleased to say the completed park – designed and constructed by skate park and youth space design and construction world leaders, CONVIC – caters to all ages, and helps people progress from whatever skill level they’re at.
“It’s also a perfect spot to socialise and spectate, and to play host to key events and competitions.
Minister for Recreation, Sport and Racing Emily Bourke said the State Government had contributed $1.3 million to bring the project to life, delivering on an election commitment.
“We are investing in quality infrastructure to help young people get active and bring the community together through sport,” she said.
“A new skate park adds to the rapidly transforming area which will be home to modern and much-needed facilities.”
Mayor Were added: “An accessible ramp to all levels, lighting, CCTV, a carpark, irrigated turf, shelter, seating, bins, drinking fountain, bike racks, and a pedestrian path to the oval and existing public toilets complete the space.
“As the trusted delivery partner for state government investment once again, we’re grateful for their $1.3 million grant – and for the support of Leon Bignell – to make the skate park possible.
“We’ve worked hard with the state and federal governments and the community on a major $8.65 million Aldinga Sports Park transformation, reflecting our focus on multi- and shared-use facilities that respond to the community’s changing needs.
“Amid major road duplications, new housing developments and a growing school community, this skate park is another timely piece of infrastructure for Aldinga.”
A free event was held to officially open the new skate park on Sunday 6 April, with the community enjoying skate demonstrations and coaching, interactive and family activities, DJ music and a free barbecue in between testing the new park.
