After the first Council Meeting of the Year in January was disrupted, and had to be abandoned, because of a noisy protest against (among other things) the Declaration of a Climate Emergency in the City of Onkaparinga, proponents of a Climate Emergency Declaration by Council are calling for a letter-writing and email campaign from the public in support of the move.
The Mayor, and all the Ward Councillors, have apparently been on the receiving end of a well-organised email campaign opposing the Emergency Declaration, and those in the community in favour of the Declaration are calling for a similar campaign in support.
Here at Aldinga Village Voice, we have sent an email along the following lines to Mayor Moira Were and all ten Ward Councillors, and we strongly encourage our readers to do the same.
“I am writing to pledge my support for the City of Onkaparinga declaring a Climate Emergency as a matter of urgency.
Recent extreme weather events in Australia – unprecedented bushfires, flood and storms, etc. – are recognised as being a result of – or are made worse by – climate change, and we are rapidly running out of time to make effective changes.”
If you agree with the Declaration of a Climate Emergency, please let the Mayor and Councillors of the City of Onkaparinga know about it, share this link with your friends and colleagues, and post it to any social media platforms to which you have access.
