This year, the settlement of Port Willunga celebrates its 175th anniversary. To mark the occasion, the Port Willunga Heritage sub-committee of the Willunga branch of the National Trust of South Australia is writing a book on its history, and they have requested that the Friends of Port Willunga reach out to its membership for assistance.
It was in October, 1850 that farmer Thomas Martin sub-divided part of his land to create the private township of Port Willunga. Books have been written about the Star of Greece ship, the jetties and the caves, but nothing on Port Willunga as a working port.
The National Trust is looking for old photographs or information to assist in the project. They have plenty of Fidge and Prosser photos so anything else would be great.
It could be photos of the old Martin homestead and farm cottage, Bill How fishing, the old kiosk, the small general store, the Prosser store and red petrol bowser, the mast of the Star of Greece that was in the car park etc.
The book will focus on 1840 to 1940 so anything from that era is of specific interest. They would welcome accompanying dates on photographs if you have them.
