Federal Labor has announced intensive care nurse and educator Marisa Bell as its candidate for the seat of Mayo in the upcoming federal election.
Marisa was a strong Labor candidate at the last federal election, where she increased the Labor vote, and has spent the past two years fighting for her community as a Councillor for the City of Onkaparinga.
Marisa has worked in the health system for more than 40 years – currently as an intensive care nurse – and is a proud member of the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation.
With this experience comes a dedication to strengthening our health system, advocating for patients, and ensuring health services are accessible and affordable for all.
The daughter of Italian migrants who came to South Australia seeking a better life for their children, Marisa shares the love of culture, language, hard work and diversity that migrants bring to Australia.
Marisa’s spent her entire working life advocating for a fair society where everyone can fulfil their potential and live a safe and prosperous life.
According to Senator Penny Wong: “As a frontline healthcare worker, Marisa knows first-hand the importance of strengthening our healthcare system.
“Marisa is an outstanding member of the local community, who has so much to offer as a strong, local voice for Mayo – and as part of an Albanese Labor Government.”
“Working in the health system as a frontline worker, I know the importance of protecting and strengthening our universal health system so it supports as many people as possible.
Marisa Bell said: “Regional communities must have access to affordable care closer to home and quality mental health services.
“As a healthcare professional for 44 years and now also a part-time carer for my own parents, I am committed to ensuring our older residents are cared for and respected in their later years. This also means recognising the value of nurses and aged care workers – and the complex work they do.”
